What is a photo cushion with text?

A photo cushion with text is a personalised cushion that carries both a photograph and your own wording, rather than one or the other. Most personalised cushions make you choose: a photo cushion prints the picture edge to edge with nowhere for words, and a text cushion sets a slogan with nowhere for a picture. This one is laid out for both — the photo sits at the top, a fine rule separates it from the wording, and your message is set underneath in a classic serif.

How much text can you put on it?

Up to 85 characters, which is roughly a line of a song, a short quotation, or a name and a date with room to spare. The wording is measured against the real typeface and fitted to the space beneath the rule: a couple of words are set large, and a longer message wraps onto two or three lines at a smaller size. Nothing is cut off and nothing runs over the seams, whatever you type.

What to write on a photo cushion

The wording that works best is the wording that only means something to the two of you. A name and the year — "The Smiths, Est. 2014". Where the photo was taken. The line you always say to each other. A single word for a nickname nobody else uses. For a wedding or an anniversary cushion, the date and the place; for a new baby, their name and their birthday; for a leaving present, the years somebody was somewhere. If you are stuck, read the photo out loud and write down what you said about it.

Choosing a photo

Any phone photo taken in reasonable light is plenty — the printed area is square, so crop to the part you actually want on the cushion. Faces should be large enough in the frame to be recognisable across a room; a wide holiday shot with three small people in it will print exactly as small as it looks on your screen. If the photo is old, scanned or a little uneven in colour, the black and white finish is usually kinder to it than full colour.

Both faces of the cover carry the design, so there is no wrong way round on the sofa. The covers are soft spun polyester with a hidden zip, supplied with the pad, in 12", 18" and 22", and the print is dye-sublimated into the fabric rather than sitting on top of it, so it will not crack or peel.
